Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter 1
How did I always end up dancing with the worst guys?
One with sweaty palms breathed in my face, and the stench of onions assaulted me. It seemed like every time
I attended my high school’s dances I found myself in the most exasperating situations. After what felt like an eternity, he returned me to my previous spot on the dance floor.
Waiting for me, sporting a baby blue shirt with light khakis, was none other than Jordan Hall. My high school’s most notorious flirt.
He shoved a hand through his thick, auburn hair. His dark eyes looked me over and a smile formed on his luscious lips. Wait, why am I calling his lips luscious? Stop thinking about that, Selena. The last thing I wanted was for him to see right through me.
He gave me a confident nod.
I couldn’t help but feel my heart do somersaults. The way his eyes lit up, you could have thought he was looking at his most prized possession. But that’s just it, I would probably never be his because he looked at every girl this way.
“Hey. How’s it going?” he asked.
“Definitely not how I planned.” I met his eye.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“Some of the guys here smell like they haven’t bathed in the past ten years.”
“I could see that. You looked pretty miserable dancing with that last one.” A realization reached his eyes. “I guess that makes me look better, right?”
He had no idea. I’d been pining over him since freshman year. Now that we were seniors, he was barely starting to catch on? There was no way I was going to tell him that. What he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him, and it most definitely wouldn’t hurt me.
“Whatever,” I said, giving him a playful shove. “This has nothing to do with you.”
“If you say so.” He extended his arm to dance with another girl.
I watched through slitted eyes as he pulled her in close. She smiled and whispered something in his ear. He laughed. She twisted her bleached blonde hair around her fingers and placed her spare hand on his bicep.
The song ended, and Jordan pulled out his phone and handed it to her. He danced with several other girls, and the pattern repeated. It was starting to feel like the movie Groundhog Day. After about five more songs, he asked me to dance.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and my insides went crazy.
He glanced over at the blonde he danced with earlier.
I leaned over and whispered in Jordan’s ear, “Did you get her number, too?”
His eyebrows shot up. “What are you talking about?”
“You know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m pretty sure you’ve asked every girl here,” I said with a grin forced across my face.
“Oh, Sissy.” He laughed and pulled me closer. “This is why I like hanging out with you.”
“First of all, the name’s Selena, not Sissy.” I flashed him a flirtatious grin. “You see, this is why I didn’t save your number in my phone when you texted me the other day.”
“Ouch.” He grinned back. “Looks like I need to do something about that.”
The song ended, and we broke apart.
I glanced at my phone. “It’s getting late. I should probably head home.”
“Head home? Why don’t you come with me over to my place, and we can talk more about why you won’t save my number into your phone?”
